Shenzhen Middle School Delegation visited Mission San Jose High School in February 2007
With the help of USCIEC in 2006, Mission San Jose High School in Fremont, California and Shenzhen Middle School in Shenzhen, China have established sister-school relationship. In order to develop more activities between Shenzhen and Mission, USCIEC and Mission San Jose High School invited 16 delegates (10 teachers and 6 students), led by Vice Principal Mr. Zhuoming Liu, from Shenzhen Middle School to attend a 2-week educational exchange program from February 4 to February 15, 2007 at Mission San Jose High School in Fremont, California entitled “Secondary Education in US.
During Shenzhen Delegation's visit to Mission, all 6 students were hosted by Mission students' families and took the daily classes in Mission. All the teachers in Shenzhen Delegation observed the following classes at Mission:
- Advanced Placement English
- Advanced Placement Physics
- Biotechnology
- Career
- Digital Photography
- Finite Math (ROP course)
- Geography
- Leadership
- Music
- Orchestra
- Psychology
- Read to Achieve
- Student Government
The Shenzhen Delegation discussed the following topics with Mr. Stuart Kew, Principal of Mission San Jose High School, and his staff:
- Career center
- Course assessment
- Course management
- Personnel management, teacher evaluation
- Student management, including tutoring, rules and regulations
- Student extra-curricular activities
- Student club
The Shenzhen Delegation's visit to Mission San Jose High School drew attention from major media, including China Press (侨报) -- the most influential Chinese newspaper in the United States of America; KTSF -- the biggest Chinese TV station in San Francisco Bay Area; Xingdao Chinese Radio -- the most influential Chinese radio in the United States of America; The Argus -- the local English newspaper in Fremont, California and from Home of the Warriors -- the newspaper of Mission San Jose High School. The KTSF's report was broadcasted twice on February 6th, 2007 at 20:00 and 22:00; China Press' articles were published on February 5th, 2007 and February 6th, 2007.
After the Shenzhen Delegation concluded their visit on February 15, 2007, Mr. Zhuoming Liu, Vice Principal of Shenzhen Middle School said, "The students at Mission are very confident, not only in academics, also in their future." Mrs. Sandy Prairie, Vice Principal of Mission said, "Thank USCIEC for the opportunity to develop a dialogue with Shenzhen Middle School. I learned so much from them as well and am excited to continue the professional discussions from some time to come." Mrs. Ivy Wu, Vice President of Board of Education of Fremont Unified School District said, "Some of the host families I talked to enjoyed the stay of the students so much that they wished they could have stayed longer. Hope more people from our school district get a chance to visit Shenzhen Middle School."
